Team player -- Mingling with the team

Parthiv patel or the other new comers to the indian cricket team had grown up seeing Sachin, Anil, Javagal with awe. Imagine their mindset when sharing the dressing room with the new set of people. It is a challenging task to maintain the individuality on one hand and to be a team player on the other. What if my team is not good !! thats the question every new joinee has and believe me I had asked it to the Assistant - VP of the organisation I joined in our informal trainings. He just looked up and said "It means you have a wrong attitude, young man". A team which is working in a reputed organisation can never be bad !! Something is going correct in there, thats why it is still a team. I just learnt few skills that are needed to be inculcated being a team player. There are :

  • Listening - it is important to listen to other people's opinions. A good listener can understand more about the discussions rather than a talkative. Listen to the diverse views and it helps clear the concepts and to understand the people and team.
  • Discussion - It is important to discuss your ideas with your teammates until you agree. Keeping ones' doubts to oneself does not help. Bring it out in the open atleast with your mentor / guide.
  • Question - it is important to ask questions, interact, and discuss the objectives of the team. It is the new joiners who provide a totally new perspective and blow in the much needed fresh air into the team discussions.
  • Persuasion - individuals are encouraged to exchange, defend, and then to ultimately rethink their ideas. Be confident in the concepts and bold enough to rethink on the ideas. There is always more than one solution to the problem.
  • Respect - it is important to treat others with respect and to support their ideas. Do not do unto others what you dont want them to do unto you.
  • Help - it is crucial to help one's coworkers, which is the general theme of teamwork. After all everyone sails the same ship and all hands are on the deck.
  • Sharing - it is important to share with the team to create an environment of team. It involves the sharing of knowledge, experience, views, thoughts and most of all a genuineness.
  • Participate - all members of the team are encouraged to participate in the team. It is the participation that helps foster the team spirit.
  • Communicating - For a team to work effectively it is essential for team members to acquire communication skills and to use effective communication channels between one another e.g. using email, IM , group meetings and so on. This will enable team members of the group to work together and achieve the team's purpose and goals.

The first day at college we were very eager to make friends and pals with hitherto unknown faces. Met up with strict and jovial professors and put up with them right through the graduation. We had our own share of fights and happy memories. Well office space is just a little professional version of the same. You meet up fresh new faces, strict or go-easy boss, moody / cheerful team mates. Put up the best effort to join and work with the team. After all, its your team !

Anyways, this article worth a hell for who wants a good team. Every team is not always the good/best, but its the team-player(s) who makes it.
