Its recession time, still companies honor their commitments and if you are entering an organization it is always like entering a LKG class room for the first time. It is going to be jittery for the first time and if you do not have your college friends with you, the feeling will be more. You might long for the breaks and lunch hours to go join up with the old pals and start talking. But, like the way you forcibly leave behind your parents and grandparents and join the class to make pals and have fun, it is neccesary to join your office team and gel with them. Your college friends also need to do the same, for their own good !! So lets just see what can YOU do to make a better start .,
+ve attitude: Leave your non-work related thoughts outside the office gates, be it your family related or personal. Put in enthusiasm in all tasks and let your enthusiastic feelrub onto the team. Have a positive approach to learn new things in each and every task that you do, you watch. It helps !!
Dress properly : No Jean Tshirt combo ! atleast not till you settle in. The dress expresses more information than you notice. An unpolished shoe or a vaguely tucked in shirt or a sleeveless blouse puts a person in a dim light. It need not be a Allen Sally or Van heusen. All that is needed is a clean dress which covers you and puts you in proper light. Dress how you want people to perceive you because it plays a huge role in how you are initially treated.
Names : Know your team mates or atleast their names. It is awkward to ask for a team mates' name after being introduced. If you are bad in remembering names, it is imperative to learn some memory aid tricks. Still if you forget just apologize and ask them :-)
Ask, Ask, Ask : If you remain silent, no one would like to disturb you. Newtons' law of inertia holds good even here. Move around, ask questions, learn new things on the team, project, organisation. Ask for guides and help to move forward in a task. It is better to try and when hitting a road block to ask for help. It is by asking questions that one gets to learn. When asking questions LISTEN for the answers and be open minded to accept the inputs.
Notes : And no matter how boring they may sound, attend all orientation sessions. Nothing gets old faster than someone repeatedly asking how something works; such behavior shows a lack of attention to detail. The personal notes help to remember and recollect the important features and procedures that are being followed.
Work full day : Your company may have flexi timings. But that does not mean you can use it all the while. One needs to earn it for practical purposes. Establish good attendance record and be on time, all the time.
