Continuing from the previous article.. The information and the points mentioned over here are some tried and tested methods to ensure that the first information becomes the best information.
Avoid office politics: Every office has its own share of gossip and rumors. It always helps to keep ones' nose clean of it. "DO NOT get involved in any trash talking around the office," was one of the initial advice I received. "Don't -- repeat -- don't solicit gossip." It is inevitable that you will come across and get exposed to office politics sooner or later. It is human nature to get involved in gossips, but atleast stay away from politics during the initial phases.
Take part in after-hours activities: It is the informal platform in the offices that offer a great oppurtunity to know your colleagues. Join the sports league, fun league, health clubs, social welfare clubs that function in your office. Show enthusiasm and learn new things about your team. Still, when you are going to parties, never booze too much.
Listen more; Talk less : "Listen, Listen, Listen . . . don't act like a know-it-all right off the bat,". Being a good listener is a quality of a leader and also a learner. Before getting a foot hold in the organization it is imperative to learn and listen the environment around you.
Track your success: Keeping track of your success will help you in answering the performance appraisals at the end of the cycle. Apart from that, it serves as a good motivation factor to make you move forward. It also helps you to understand where you are when compared to your peers around you. That in itself is a good indication of your progress.
Inform your boss: Be it your success, failure keep your boss informed. It is imperative that the boss knows about the person he is managing. It helps you by removing roadblocks ahead in your career path and might also result in your manager helping you chalk out better path. Informing about the failures will help the manager replan the team activities. Do not keep it unto yourself, at the same time do not be a nuisance.
Final thoughts: Being the newest member of the team is both exciting and challenging. You are the fresh blood in to the team. Try to make the best impression of yourself with the team members. Do not worry if you dont. Relax, keep your mind open and do your job well and it will go a long way in making a lasting impression.
All the best !!
